Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Review

Today I’m reviewing one of my latest and favourite purchases, the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. This is one of those products that once you start using, you don’t know how you managed without it for so long.

I am obsessed with it! It’s been a game-changer for me and has dramatically improved my makeup and how it lasts.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder

The setting powder is a translucent loose powder that does exactly what it says, it sets your makeup. It lasts for up to 16 hours, has a beautiful matte finish and is extremely lightweight to wear. It comes in an easy-to-use tub, that has clean and attractive packaging.

Available in 3 shades:

  • Translucent- for fair to medium skin tones
  • Translucent Honey- for skin tones with olive and golden undertones
  • Translucent Medium Deep- for medium-deep to deep undertones

Because it has a translucent colour, it works well for all skin colours and skin tones. I have extremely light skin and the translucent powder works like a charm.

My favourite part is how it creates a perfect, smooth canvas for makeup. It literally blurs all the lines and pores. It also takes away any shine from your makeup and keeps it at bay throughout the day!

Another fab feature is that you won’t get any flashbacks while taking your photo on the red carpet. Or if you’re like me, you won’t have flashbacks while taking a selfie;)

It is suitable for all skin types, from dry to oily. One thing that dry skin has to be careful with when it comes to setting powders is that the setting powder won’t set in your fine lines and wrinkles (not that any of us have wrinkles!). With this setting powder, you don’t need to worry about that, it doesn’t set in lines or accentuate them! Although, I tend to avoid applying it under my eyes where I have far too many creases.

How to Apply the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder?

the best setting powder

To get the best results from the setting powder you should apply it after your foundation or really any creamy formula. That way it has something to hold on to.

The best way to apply it is with the Laura Mercier Velour Puff. You can really use any puff, beauty blender or brush and it will work fine too. Pour a little of the powder from the tub into the lid. If you are using a puff, rub the powder into the puff and then apply.

A neat setting powder trick is to use a damp applicator for a smooth application. Use a circular motion while gently pressing to get that powder going.

Using the Translucent Loose Powder

Getting flawless skin is a process that involves using a few different products, one of which is applying the right setting powder. I have always used setting powder but honestly, I didn’t notice they did much in the past. I saw small differences but nothing wow. That was until now!

From the minute I applied the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder it was as if I was photoshopping my face. I use Photoshop the whole time on the computer and I always wished I could photoshop my face;)

It gives my skin a matte finish and takes away any lines and creases that are there. It also fills in my open pores to the point where they aren’t visible!

Since the powder is translucent it doesn’t add any colour on top of your foundation, which I really like since I’m extremely pale and often tinted setting powders are too dark for my skin.

It does its magic and invisibly blends into your skin. Do you know that flawless airbrushed look? Well, that is exactly what the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder gives you. Perfect, flawless and airbrushed skin.

One of the tricks with applying any setting powder is to apply it before the foundation dries (or whatever other wet product you are applying it over). Get that powder on while your makeup is still wet and the results are much more effective.

If you have very dry skin, avoiding the very dry areas will stop the powder from creasing. As I said, I try to avoid applying powder under my eyes because that’s a very dry area for me. For that, I rely on my trusted setting spray. Read more about the differences between setting powder and setting spray.

The Pros of the Translucent Loose Setting Powder

  • Gives a soft and flawless look
  • Has a matte finish that’s non-drying
  • Keeps oil at bay without looking cakey
  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • The powder lasts a long time
  • Oil-free formula
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Dermatologist tested

The Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder has so many benefits to it, and another one is that the container is practical too. I like that there is a separation between the powder and the lid. The loose-setting powders that come without a separation between the lid and powder get very messy and annoying to use.

This setting powder is perfect for baking. Read my post on what is baking in makeup and how to do it right!

The Cons of the Translucent Loose Setting Powder

The only drawback I can think of is that it’s on the pricier side. However, that is to be expected from Laura Mercier, it’s a designer brand and you pay for the brand name. But that being said, you get a quality face powder that does the job it’s supposed to do, plus more! For a more affordable option, check out these setting powders for dry skin.

  1. I like to use finishing powder because it helps to make the skin look smoother by hiding pores and fine lines, particularly on camera. Powder setting and finishing powder can be used to make people love the smooth, healthy, youthful skin.

If you’ve ever used one of those pure white loose mineral powders, in flash photography you know what they might look like just like your review. The Laura Mercier Powder is on the right, since it had no flashback. The Laura Mercier Powder is translucent, but it has a beige tone, as you can see.

    1. White powders can be tricky to use because they often look… white! The Laura Mercier Translucent Powder is literally fool-proof because it is translucent.

  2. Thanks for this review of Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder. I normally don’t wear a finishing powder but I want to look great for a get wedding I’m going to in a few weeks. I want to look my best. I have older skin. I’m 55 years old. I’m looking for something that I can wear that will finish out my look without my face looking dry or powdery. Meaning, I want to do my best to look natural. Is this powder effective on older skin?

    1. As long as you use the right primer and foundation the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder will be effective on all skin!

  3. I’m looking for birthday gift idea for my girlfriend. She uses some product of Laura Mercier and she likes it. I have noticed that she doesn’t have the setting powder you review here. Might be a good surprise.

I wonder, if you have any idea or experience with this powder on Asian skin?

    1. I don’t have any experience with Asian skin but it is made to work on all skin types and shades!

  4. Thanks for yet another wonderful discovery Hollies

This s why I like popping into your blog, because I know I will always find new things to try out.

This Laura Mercier sure sounds like the best setting powder any girl can ask for.

I look forward to trying it, and hope it looks good on me like you say it does on you..

    Cheers..

  5. Taking all your time to put on make up, with all the skill you can muster and coming out looking like theirs still something missing, like you’ve not really ”finished”.

I believe Laura Mercier Setting Powder will do the trick of taking our worries of seemingly unfinished make up, by giving it that completeness and perfection every make up artist like to have.

Your post on Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder is so full of great insights. I love your idea of review because i learn alot from it. Thank you so much for sharing those points! I have found it extremely helpful because ever since I got pregnant, my facial skin is not that smooth any longer so my intention is getting a new powder. I will definitely give this a try. Thanks once again.

    1. Thanks for stopping by:)

  7. A great article on the makeup powder. I have used makeup such as concealer and compact powder before but I stopped because I really didn’t like the quality of the product. Although the loose powder is expensive, I still think that it is of great quality. I think I might give it a try. Thank you for providing a wonderful article!

  8. Hey Hollie,

After reading your excellent article I learned a lot about Laura Mercier Powder. This is such a cosmetic that will be useful for me. I am a dancer. Moreover, the color of my skin is shiny and oily. I think it will be practically perfect for me. Would you mind if, have there any kind of side effect on the skin?
Thank you sincerely for the excellent article.

    Best Regards,
    Ranao.

    1. Nopes, I never have any kind of reaction to it and I haven’t heard of anyone who has!
