Too Faced Born This Way Foundation Review

You need to stay on the ball when it comes to your makeup routine and this includes knowing when to change your makeup products. For me, it was time to change my foundation.

Until not long ago I was using the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H foundation which I really love. However, I was wearing it for quite a few years and I felt it was starting to look a bit blah on me. It was time for a change and I hate change. I had read great reviews about the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation so I decided to try it out!

What to Look For In a Foundation

Before you look for the perfect foundation you have to know the different features that they have.

  • The type of coverage- full, medium or light
  • Is it oil-based or water-based
  • What type of finish- matte or sheer
  • Is it long-wearing
  • Do you want a photo-friendly foundation
  • Is it heavy or lightweight to wear
  • Does it work on sensitive skin
  • Do the ingredients contain bad stuff
  • Does it come in your colour

These are just a few things to consider before you buy a foundation or any base coverage.

What is the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation is medium to full coverage and very buildable too. The foundation is extremely lightweight and very comfortable to wear.

I hate it when I feel that I am caked in makeup. Makeup has to look natural and feel natural, if it doesn’t, you’re most probably wearing the wrong makeup.

Born This Way Foundation Shades

Too Faced born this way foundation colours

Born This Way Foundation comes in 35 shades. It would be hard not to find a colour that matches your skin shade. They have different undertones for each shade, ensuring you’ll find the one for you.

Ingredients

More often than not our makeup products contain ingredients that are harmful to us. This is the opposite of the Too Face Born This Way Foundation. Not only aren’t the ingredients bad for us, but they are actually good for us.

The main ingredients are:

  • Coconut Water: replenishes the moisture level in the skin
  • Hyaluronic Acid: helps to give the skin a smoother more youthful look
  • Alpine Rose: helps the skin’s overall health and resilience

These are the main good-for-you ingredients, but it’s not only what the foundation contains that counts, it’s also what it doesn’t contain that you need to know about. The foundation doesn’t contain any gluten or parabens. It’s cruelty-free and suitable for vegans.

My Honest Review of The Too Faced Born This Way Foundation

The first stage in buying foundation is to get the right colour and the best way to do so is to try the foundation on your skin. Usually, I am the lightest shade available, but I didn’t want to take the risk of buying the wrong shade, so off I went to my local John Lewis.

The staff were super helpful and very knowledgeable about the brand they were selling. Don’t assume this is always the case, I’ve experienced quite the opposite with other brands. The sales lady helped me pick out the perfect shade which wasn’t even the lightest to my utter shock.

You can see from my hand swatch how smooth the foundation is and this is without a primer!

The shade I bought is Swan, it’s the second lightest shade and it blends into my skin beautifully. Naturally, my face is a little darker than my neck and this foundation blends perfectly into both. You can’t see where it begins and where it ends.

It has lovely natural coverage, it doesn’t look heavy, yet it still covers every imperfection on my skin. It evens out the skin tone and any other discolouration and literally blurs imperfections.

With other foundations by the of the day, my face feels oily and all I want to do is rub the whole thing off (which is what I often end up doing!). The Born This Way Foundation is extremely lightweight and lasts seamlessly the whole day. It looks perfect in photos too. There is no shine or reflection with it.

A few people have complained that the foundation looks very cakey. This is usually because you are using the wrong primer or no primer at all. The foundation needs something to cling to. When foundation sits on the skin it will never look flawless and smooth.

You need a primer and it needs to be a good one. At the moment I am using the Too Faced Hangover Primer. So far it is doing a really good job, I have only just started using it so I will update you when I have been using it for longer.

too faced hangover primer

The reason I bought the Too Faced Hangover Primer is that firstly it is silicone-free. Keep away from silicone in any product that sits on your skin. It’s really one of the worst things you can do to your skin.

Another reason I bought it is that it acts as a moisturising skin cream as well as a primer. It’s full of good ingredients to help your skin. A full review will come shortly!

Another reason why the foundation may look cakey is that it’s not the best for dry skin types. As my skin has started aging and has become drier, I’ve found that the Born This Way Foundation is a little too drying on my skin. I recommend the foundation for combination to oily skin types.

My Thoughts

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation is a really great full-coverage foundation for oily to combination skin. I really enjoyed using it in my oilier days, however, now that my skin is drier, I’ve opted for more hydrating foundations like Saie Glowy Hydrobounce Serum Foundation and the Kosas The Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation.

  1. I certainly value your reviews on Makeup products and one of your previous reviews helped me once too.

I am too, very light skinned and I am also not a huge fan of wearing makeup each and every day. However, I am soon invited to a huge celebration which, of course, requires a great appearance and, good makeup.

In the past, I always thought I had found a good makeup foundation but something always wasn’t right. Either the skin tone really didn’t match or it felt too cakey on the face.

I like the review on the “Too Faced Born This Way Foundation” (funny name though) it seems easy to be used and will feel great too on my face.

What I also wasn’t aware of is the fact that you always should use a primer too. This probably can explain why I had an issue in the past with other makeup products.

I will try out both and will let you know how it felt and worked for me. I am sure it will be great!

Thank you for this great review, appreciated.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and let me know how you get on!

  2. I am falling inlove with this foundation as I read through your thorough review.

I love the fact that you’ve actually used it and are speaking from experience, ajes me trust the product more.

There is nothing like always having the assurance that what goes on your skin is something that is actually helpful and not just full of junk that ends up being harmful.

I would love to give this foundation a try, but I am someone that has a very sensitive skin that easily reacts to changes. So I would like to know, from your experience do you think it’s something one can easily react to?

    1. From my experience, I think it is ok for sensitive skin. If you are worried, go to your local shop that sells Too Faced and test it out on your skin. That way you can be sure you won’t react to it.

      Thanks for stopping by:)

  3. A while ago I found the right foundation colour for me, or so I thought. It’s one of the Lancôme shades. I like the fact that too – faced foundation contains coconut water, hyaluronic acid and Alpine rose. Looking at all 35 colours of the too – faced foundation, I’m wondering which one would suit the colour of my skin. How do you pick the right one?

  4. Misty Outdoors says:

I use foundation every day and I agree with you. It can be challenging to find the right foundation with the coverage I’m looking for. I like your tips on what to look for in a foundation as well. I do try my best to get foundation that has less ingredients. I love the fact that the Too Face foundation has ingredients that are healthy. This seems hard to find in foundations. I live in AZ and we don’t have a John Lewis. What other places could I go
to get staff to help me find the right color?

    1. You could pop into any shop that sells makeup, there’s usually always someone around to help!
