We’ve all been there and done that. I’m talking about the time that your makeup was perfect, only for you to look in the mirror an hour later, and to your horror, your makeup is smudged and creased. These moments are annoying and can sometimes be embarrassing too. I know from personal experience how it affects one’s confidence.

There are many different factors that can cause your makeup not to last, from your skin type to the weather. However, you don’t need to dwell on the reasons for it happening, with a makeup setting spray, oily and disappearing makeup will be a thing of the past.

I’ve put together the best makeup setting sprays and finishing sprays for all skin types and all finishes so that you can choose the best one for you and your skin. Some target oily skin and others add a luminous glow, there’s something for everyone.

Best Long-Lasting: Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

One of my personal favourite setting sprays is the Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray. It’s a long-lasting setting spray, that lasts for up to 16 hours of wear without creasing or smudging. It literally holds the makeup in place and doesn’t let it budge!

This makeup spray is ideal for those whose skin doesn’t let makeup stay on. With a matte finish, it’s suitable for oily to dry skin and everything in between. Comfortable to wear, it’s a weightless mist that dries down quickly.

It has a unique formula called Temperature Control Technology which lowers the temperature of your makeup so that it never has reason to get messed up.

The setting spray comes in two sizes, 118ml and a travel size of 30ml. The travel option is great if you’re not whether the product is for you.

Best for Oily Skin: NYX Cosmetics Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray

This is a lovely budget option for a setting spray. The best part about this spray is that if you wouldn’t know the price you would think it was high-end. And why pay more for a product when you get the same quality for a fraction of the price?!

The NYX Cosmetics Matte Finish Setting Spray is extremely long-lasting and dries really quickly too. The finish can be a little misleading, it says it’s a matte finish on the bottle but it actually has a matte glow, which is essentially a matte finish with a touch of dewiness. This is nice if you love a dewy look or if your makeup often looks a little dull. It will brighten it up without your makeup looking greasy.

Ideal for oily skin, yet suitable for all, the finishing spray sets the makeup and reduces shine throughout the day. Made with the skincare ingredient niacinamide, it improves the skin texture, giving you a flawless finish.

The spray comes in a 60ml bottle which is a little on the small side, however, for that price it is still worth it!

Best for Combination Skin: Lancôme Fix It Forget It Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray

I’m not one to buy into designer makeup simply because of its name. When I recommend luxury designer makeup, it means the product is that good! The Lancome Fix It Forget It Setting Spray is like the Rolls-Royce of setting sprays.

The name speaks for itself, you fix your makeup and then you will forget it’s there. It leaves you without any lasting smells or stickiness. The spray is really lightweight with a very fine mist that makes it easy to use and has very little chance of messing up your makeup. One of the loveliest features is that it doesn’t settle into wrinkles or pores.

The Lancome Fix It Forget It Setting Spray is one of the priciest setting sprays here. However, the quality is top-notch and if it’s within your budget, it’s worth every penny!

When you use the spray you may think it is too lightweight to actually do anything. I know that’s what I thought, however, after going for a bike ride in the heat and returning to see my makeup 100% intact, I quickly changed my mind. When I say that it kept my makeup intact, I mean it, there were no oily or patchy areas.

The Lancome Fix It Forget It Setting Spray has a matte finish and is for all skin types. It’s made with many natural ingredients like kiwi extract and witch hazel leaf extract as well as hyaluronic acid which all have many benefits for your skin.

Best Drugstore: e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set

The e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set Clear Spray combines both quality and budget to a T. The highly affordable setting spray has all the qualities of a high-end setting spray at a drugstore price.

The finishing spray is easy to use and dries really quickly. It has a matte finish and is suitable for all skin types. The setting spray soothes and hydrates the skin with its key ingredients like green tea, aloe and vitamins A, C and E. It is excellent for sensitive skin too.

With this setting spray, your makeup will last the whole day and many people have said they prefer it over all the high-end setting sprays that are on the market. It stays on the whole day and still looks fresh with a noticeable difference. Instead of applying makeup multiple times a day, you can simply spritz a little of the spray and voila, perfect makeup.

e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set Clear Spray comes in a bottle of 60ml which is a little on the smaller side, but for its price, it is totally worth it!

My Thoughts

Each of these setting sprays made it into this list because they stuck out as the best ones on the market. Obviously, each and every one of us has different and unique skin.

One thing to be aware of is that everyone reacts differently to different products, and external factors also make a difference. What works for one may not work for another. The key is to find the one that works best for you.

For makeup to last even longer and better, I recommend using a face primer, an eye primer and a setting powder. Each of these only takes a few seconds to apply but makes a HUGE difference in how long your makeup lasts!
