Now that it’s summer and the sun is out, it’s time to hit the beach and get that perfect beach body. By this, I of course mean sunbathing for a beautiful golden tan.
With all the excitement involved with warm dreamy weather, it’s easy to lose focus and forget how dangerous the sun can be.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the sun and I love tanning but over the years I’ve learnt how to do it safely and I’m going to share my tips with you here!
Exfoliate Your Skin
It is always a good idea to exfoliate before tanning for the simple reason that exfoliating removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores and removes oil.
This evens out your skin tone making it smoother. Removing the layers of dead skin cells means you have fewer layers of skin, thus, resulting in your tan lasting longer.
It also results in a smoother tan result. It may be another step in your skincare routine but in the long run, it’s well worth your while!
Wear Sun Cream
This may sound like an obvious tip, but you’d be surprised at how important it is and at how many people get it wrong. In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 5 million people are treated for skin cancer every year.
My point- don’t underestimate the sun! Wearing SPF is essential, and that’s not only when the sun is out. Even on a cloudy day, UV rays are present. If the thought of applying sunscreen every day is daunting, opt for a moisturiser or foundation that has SPF in it.
If getting a tan is your goal, don’t worry! Even with sunscreen, you can get a good tan in as little time as an hour.
Make sure to wear at least SPF 30, anything below that will not protect your skin properly. Apply the sun cream about 30 minutes before you go out and reapply it every 1-2 hours.
Avoid Peak Hours
Avoid going out during the middle of the day which is when the sun is at its hottest and the most dangerous. It’s better to go out in the morning or late afternoon- yes you can still tan during non-peak hours:)
Don’t Stay Out For Too Long
The best way to get a healthy tan is to not stay out in the sun for too long. Take it in small doses, tanning gradually reduces the risk of getting burnt and your tan will last longer.
Rock your look with a stylish hat and sunglasses. Your eyes and your face, in general, are more sensitive to the sun than most areas, so it’s very important to protect them that bit more. Now that big hats are fashionable it’s perfect for those beach days.
After spending time out in the sun always make sure you give your skin plenty of TLC after. The sun dries out the skin so make sure to moisturise and drink plenty of water to add that lost moisture back into the skin, and to keep your skin hydrated.
Opt For A Self Tanner
If it’s a tan you’re after, why not use a self-tanning or fake-tanning product. They are the easiest, quickest and safest way to get an even glowing tan. You get all of the advantages, without any of the disadvantages.
What’s more, is that you get a beach body without even getting to the beach! There are loads of amazing self-tanners out there. I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite ones here!
With these tips, you’ll achieve perfectly glowing and healthy skin in no time. Just remember health comes before beauty, even if it means being more patient with getting that summer glow:)
