Are You Guilty of Brushing your Hair the Wrong Way?

Are You Guilty of Brushing Your Hair the Wrong Way?

Did you know that there’s such a thing as brushing your hair the wrong way? I didn’t, until a couple of years ago. You’re probably thinking- and so what if I brush my hair the wrong way? Does it really make a difference?

Surprisingly enough it can make a huge difference. Brushing your hair the wrong way can cause your hair to fall out and split.

Brushing your hair the right way is indeed something that we should all implement and the truth is it’s very easy to do so! Here I’m sharing with you some easy tips on brushing your hair the right way.

1. Don’t brush your hair from the top

One of the quickest ways to ruin your hair is to brush it from the top! That is, especially if you have curly knotty hair like me.

When you brush your hair from the top, you are essentially ripping through all the knots, either causing your hair to fall out or to break.

When you start from the bottom you are far less likely to cause any breakages because, when you do so you are slowly working your way through the knots slowly.

Give your hair that extra TLC that it needs and brush it from the bottom first.

2. Use the right kind of brush

use paddle brush

Another common mistake when brushing your hair is using the wrong kind of brush. The best kind of brush to use is a paddle brush since the base moves with the bristles.

This makes it less harsh on your hair and less likely to rip your hair out too. A thin-pronged comb is the worst thing you can do for your hair.

There are times when we all need to use a comb, for example, a haircut, and that’s ok. But in your main hair routine, make sure to use a brush that has a soft movable base.

3. Don’t over-brush your hair

Are you familiar with the 1950s motto of brushing your hair 100 strokes a day? I think in some cultures they still practise this, but we now know that this does not help your hair at all.

In fact, all it does is damage your hair and make it greasy! Brush your hair in the morning and evening and you will see better results than 100 strokes can ever give you!

4. Don’t brush wet hair

This is a tough one for me, I’ve got thick, curly hair and naturally, when I come out of the shower, I like to brush it to neaten it up.

However, this is probably one of the quickest ways to ruin your hair. According to the experts when hair is wet the hair shaft is weakened. This makes your hair much more susceptible to breakages.

If you’re in a rush, carefully brush your hair using a wide-pronged comb.

5. Use conditioner or hair spray

If you have thin, manageable hair, then you can skip this tip. This is for those with thick, hard-to-manage hair.

Using a leave-in conditioner or a detangling hair spray will give your hair an extra softness making brushing it a lot easier.

Check out my tips to read more on how to manage curly hair and check out the best shampoos and conditioners for damaged hair.

With these 5 tips on how to avoid brushing your hair the wrong way, you will see healthier hair in no time. Hair needs its own special TLC and it’s not hard, too time-consuming or expensive to give your hair the proper care that it needs. Because we all want healthy, glossy hair!

  1. As I was reading this article, I was SOOOOOO SOO guilty of making all of the mistakes here. I literally did all of them not knowing that I was brushing my hair the wrong way. This might explain why I kept losing SO much hair, you won’t even believe how much hair I have lost. It made me sad and I didnt what the cause of it was but I am so glad I read this article. It is so helpful and I will certainly share this with my friends!!

    1. Sadly most of us are guilty! So don’t worry you’re not alone in that. Good luck in implementing the changes and I’m sure you’ll see results from them, especially less hair loss:)

  2. First of all: ooopss I committed all those mistakes. I did not know that it existed a right direction to brush my hair! I usually change the direction everyday when I brush my hair and also I brush it after taking a pleasant shower… when is wet ohh what a disaster hahaha.

Thanks for you advice. I won’t commit those mistakes again

    1. :)) I hope you notice a positive change in your hair!

  3. Woow!! That was an eye opening post. It’s seems that my little sister has being brushing her hair the wrong way all along. I seriously need to get her to read this post before she end up loosing all her hair. I will pass this post to her. What about men, how are they suppose to brush their hair? Thanks for this informative post.

    1. There’s no difference between men and women! Both have hair and both need to brush with the same precautions.

  4. Simple rules and yet very much overlooked about the effects it has of brushing your hair. Girls spend thousands on their hair and a easy trick such as these will go a long way to have stronger and healthier hair. I have also found great difference by using coconut oil as a mask to moisturise an strengthen my hair.

    1. Coconut oil is a good moisturiser and pretty inexpensive too!

  5. Interesting article; please i have a quick question; when brushing your hair is it necessary to spray your hair with some hair sheen or ointment for a shiny look.

secondly, how do you know when its okay to stop brushing your hair, how does it feel when the hair is set and perfect.

    Thanks

    1. If you want a shiny look then you can spray your hair.

We no longer live in the times when people thought brushing their hair 100 times made the hair better. My advice- brush your hair normally.

  6. WOW! I been brushing my hair the wrong way my whole life. I have always started from the top. The brush yes I have one just like it. And about the wet hair men that is a big eye opener for me. I was always taught that is better to do when its wet for it could detangle my hair. How does that work for men is it the same?

    1. I assume the same rule applies for men- they do have the same hair, no?!

  7. Emmanuel Buysse says:

    Great post and good info.

The most of the tips you give is actually pretty obvious to do, but still many girls fail to do it.

My wife knows the majority of the tips you give, like the brush, which is actually very logical to do, if you think about it

Anyway, it is good you do a post to help the girls who are struggling with it.

    So, thanks for sharing it!
