Finding the right foundation is always a challenge, and too often people end up wearing the wrong colour. With all of the different brands, colours, tones and finishes it can all get a little confusing. Before you get downtrodden, there are ways simple ways to fix that. Here are 5 tips that will help you find your foundation colour online. Follow these tips and you’ll have a breeze finding your perfect foundation:)
1. Know what you’re looking for
Before you even begin your online search, know what you want. You have to decide if you want a liquid or powder foundation, matte or shine finish, and how much coverage. These factors are all personal and depend on your skin type.
Generally speaking, if you have very oily skin, you should go for a powder foundation with a matte finish, and if you have dry skin you should go for a liquid foundation with a shine. The coverage depends entirely on your preferences and the condition of your skin. Personally, I have combination skin with large pores so I like to wear a liquid matte foundation in medium coverage. I like medium coverage because I wear it daily and I don’t like to look ‘caked’!
2. Know your undertones
One of the most important steps in finding the correct foundation shade, whether you’re in a shop or online is knowing your undertones. Without knowing your right undertones, forget ever getting the right foundation. Now don’t get put off, figuring out your undertone colour is super easy.
There are 3 types of undertones, warm, cold and neutral. To see what undertones you have look at the back of your wrist at the veins there. If the veins are blue it means you have cool undertones, if they are green it means you have warm undertones and if you aren’t sure then you probably have neutral! Simple to figure out, yet makes all the difference in your makeup!
3. Read reviews
Reviews are priceless in helping understand a product. Obviously, every review is pretty subjective, but if you read or watch a couple of reviews on the same product, you will get a feel for the product in no time. You can also find a beauty guru whom you trust to give honest reviews.
4. Use Findation.com to help you
I recently discovered this website and I think it’s really clever. The way it works is that it asks you a couple of questions about yourself and a few of the previous foundations you’ve previously used. Based on these facts, it finds similar products that match your criteria and previous shades. I’m still testing it out so I’m not sure how accurate its findings are, but it’s definitely a very useful tool that can help a lot!
5. Make use of online chat
Many online shops nowadays have a chat option. This is available to assist you in case you need help. Make use of it! I use this service the whole time and it’s always helped me! Let me share a small cheeky secret with you- American customer service is always friendlier and more helpful than English ones. If you find a shop in the US that stocks the makeup you want, ask them for help!
6. If you’re not sure on a shade go 1 or 2 lighter
Now that you have a general idea of what type of foundation you want and you know your undertones, it’s time to choose the shade. This is definitely very tricky to get right online. My advice is that if you’re not sure go a shade or 2 lighter. The reason for this is that even if the foundation is too light on you, you can always add bronzer and contour to even out the tone.
I hope these tips to find your foundation colour online help you because they’ve made a massive difference in my own experiences of makeup shopping online. These are just my favourite tips but if you have any other tips or tricks that work well for you, I’d love to hear:) Do let me know in the comments below:))
